Top tips for making your fresh-cut tree festive for the holiday season

(NC)—The holiday season is a wonderful time of year, and for many of us, it isn’t complete without a fresh-cut tree. Choosing the right tree and knowing how to care for it requires some skill and attention. That’s why The Home Depot Canada shares these tips to ensure your fresh-cut tree experience is as festive as the holiday.

Pick the perfect spot:

Before going to pick-up a tree, be sure to identify where in the home you’ll be placing it. Take into account the height of the ceiling, a six-inch radius for the tree stand and the location of your fireplace. Placing the tree in the middle of the room? Allow at least a one to two-foot clearance on all sides for passersby. And to avoid scratching the wall, allow for a six-inch gap.

Choose a scent:

If a real tree is on your family’s wish list this year, The Home Depot stores across Canada carry Noble and Fraser fir trees, both of which have a subtle pine scent and classic Christmas tree shape. The main difference between the tree types is that Noble firs are pure dark green in colour, while Fraser firs are green with a silver tinge.

Stand it up:

Before setting up your tree, it’s important to cut one-quarter inch off the base of the tree to allow water to be absorbed through the trunk. You’re then ready to place it in a sturdy stand. Just check it daily to ensure it has enough water; trees can need as much as three litres a day.

Trimming the tree:

Once the tree is up, the fun begins. For a chic look, select ornaments that provide a complementary colour scheme, such as gold and red or blue and silver. For easy decorating, hang the lights first, followed by the ornaments. If you have little ones or pets, be sure to leave the bottom portion of the tree bare and never allow them around the tree unsupervised.

Packing up your tree:

Check local tree recycling schedules and stipulations to safely dispose of trees. Sweep up the pine needles, carefully pack up the ornaments and tree stand so they will be ready to go next year.
